Create a single-elimination tournament bracket

Do you need to organize a competition without preparing every matchup by hand? With SorteosUp's online tournament generator, you can enter players, pairs or teams and automatically create a single-elimination bracket.

The tool randomly draws the opening matchups and organizes every round needed to reach the final. You can then choose each match winner, enter the score and move through the bracket step by step until you know the champion. You can also enable a third-place match between the semifinal losers.

How does the tournament generator work?

Enter a name to identify the competition, add a date if you want to, and enter one participant per line. Check that there are no duplicates, decide whether you want a third-place match and select Create tournament.

SorteosUp generates the opening matchups at random. From there, you can review the fixtures, enter scores, select winners and complete the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

What is a single-elimination tournament?

In a single-elimination tournament, the loser of a matchup is eliminated and the winner advances to the next round. The process continues until two finalists remain, and the winner of the final becomes champion.

With eight participants, the bracket normally has four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and one final: seven matches in total. With 16 participants, there will be eight opening matches, four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and a final.

Bracket and knockout-draw generator

Bracket is the English term for the draw that represents matchups and progression. It is also known as a knockout draw, tournament tree, competition bracket, elimination draw, tournament fixtures or matchup chart.

The bracket generator creates the structure from a list and saves you from drawing lines or recalculating every round by hand. The opening draw is completely random; if you use seeds, rankings or restrictions, apply those rules before creating the bracket.

What happens if the number of participants is odd?

Not every tournament has exactly four, eight, 16 or 32 participants. With five, six, seven, ten or 12 participants, the bracket adapts to the next complete structure.

Some participants may advance without playing the opening match. This is called a bye, exemption or automatic advance. The bracket clearly shows which participants play and which receive that bye.

Third-place match

Enable this option before generating the bracket if you want the two semifinal losers to play each other. That lets you determine the champion, runner-up and third-place finisher.

It is useful for sporting tournaments, school championships, medal competitions, events that award three prizes and internal club or company tournaments.

Tournaments for football, padel, video games and groups

The generator works for football, five-a-side football, padel, tennis, badminton, basketball, chess, darts, board games and any competition compatible with single elimination. In padel, each line can represent a pair.

It also works for EA Sports FC, Fortnite, League of Legends, Valorant, Counter-Strike, Rocket League, Mario Kart and LAN competitions. Schools and companies can organize debates, contests, table tennis, table football, cultural activities or team challenges. For minors, use only first names, initials, aliases or team names.

Standard and certified tournaments

The standard mode lets you create and complete a bracket in the browser for up to 500 participants. The certified mode is designed to preserve technical traceability for the configuration, participants, opening matchups, scores, advancement decisions, random tiebreaks and champion.

The certificate confirms the data recorded by the platform, but it does not replace the competition rules or independently guarantee how each match was played. Define the duration, scoring, tiebreaks, substitutions, prizes and how results will be communicated beforehand.

Tips for organizing a tournament

Before generating the bracket, confirm who is taking part, which format will be used, how long each match lasts, what happens in a tie, the date, location and whether there will be a third-place match. Check the final list: adding someone after you start may require redrawing the matchups.

Use random teams to split people into groups, random pairs to make duos and the tournament generator to match those people or teams until there is a champion.
